Volunteer guidelines

Visits happen on site, during scheduled hours

Only during the times a nursing home has opened to volunteers, with staff present in the building. Never meet a resident away from the nursing home, and never arrange a visit privately.

Companionship only

Talking, reading, cards, games, music, letters, photos. Never help with medication, bathing, dressing, toileting, moving someone, or feeding. If a resident needs anything, find a staff member.

Privacy matters

What you hear about a resident's health, family or history stays at the nursing home. No photos or video of residents, and nothing on social media — this is a legal requirement for the nursing home, not just a preference.

If something feels wrong

Tell a staff member straight away, and email us at hello@kids4care.org. That includes anything that makes you uncomfortable, and anything that worries you about a resident's care. You will never be in trouble for raising something.

Turn up, or cancel early

Residents look forward to these visits. If you can't make it, cancel through the site so someone else can take your place.

What the nursing home may ask for

Many nursing homes require a short orientation, and some require a TB test, before a first visit. Your coordinator will tell you what's needed.
